【报告题目】Brief Sketch of Hokkaido University and Research Activity in Division of Materials Science and Engineering
摘要：Hokkaido University started out in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, and students have learned many subjects related to engineering such as civil engineering, mechanics and mathematics. In the former part of my presentation, I will talk on the history of the university and the Faculty of Engineering.
In the latter part of my presentation, I would like to talk on the research activities in our division, Materials Science and Engineering. There are11 research groups in our division, and various research topics, such as new reaction routes of materials as economical and ecological processes, the control of surface and inside microstructures of bulk materials for improved properties, and development of new class of high temperature materials for energy production, have been investigated.
The key words of my researches are as follows: phase diagram, phase stability, intermetallic compounds, microstructure, mechanical properties, and so on.I have been working on fundamental studies such as deformation behaviors of intermetallic compounds and Mg alloys single crystals, development of ternary and quaternary phase diagrams composed of Mg, transition metal elements (Zn, Al, Ni) and rare-earth elements (Y, Dy, Ho), and alloy designing of ultra-high temperature materials based on refractory metal silicides. We have also tried to develop new methods and techniques to accelerate our research activity. Recently we are trying to combine conventional phase diagram researches with 1st principles calculations to understand and expand traditional rules for alloy designing such as the atomic size rule for the stability of AB2-Laves phase. The Laves phase is one of the biggest groups of intermetallic compounds appearing in various alloy systems such as Mg, Fe and refractory metals. Alloys withLaves phases tend to show lower toughness. The stability of the Laves phase has been believed to be governed by the ratio of the diameter of component elements A and B, i.e., DA/DB. However, in ternary Laves phases such as Nb(Ni, Al)2 it is thought to be difficult to apply the rule. We found that the partial molar volumes of elementsin some Laves phase are not the same with that of pure elements, and it was confirmed by 1st principles calculations. We could successfully modify the old rule for designing of new multi-component alloys. This is a good example of the research strategy of Materials Science and Engineering; the coupling of old, empirical rules with modern physics shed light on alloy designing.
