School of Materials Science and Engineering(MSE),Xi¡¯an Jiaotong University(XJTU),was established on the base of relative divisions fouded in 1952 in Department of Mechanical Engineering,Jiaotong University(Shanghai),Which was moved to Xi¡¯An in 1957 along with whe main body of the university.Research institute for Strength of Metals was founded in 1963.Department of Materials Science and Engineering was founded in 1963.Department of Materials Science and Engineering was founded in 1983,which is the first ones to offer Master degree,PhD degree in China .The Specialty of Metal Materials and its Heat-treatment (now named as Materials Science)was approved as a Key Subject in 1988(authorized again in 1995£¬2002 and 2007),based on which School of MSE was established in 1994.Department of Material Forming and Controlling was merged into MSE in 2002.Now MSE consists of 3 departments:Material Science, Material Engineering, Material Physics and Chemistry,and 5 research institutes:Material Strength,Surface Engineering,New Materials,Welding and Casting. There are several teaching/researching laboratories with newly facilities.It also includes the State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials.
Many material scientists have worked in MSE,including members of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering,such as Prof.ZHOU Zhihong,Prof.ZHOU Huijiu,Prof.TU Mingjing,and so on .Now there are 85 staff members at MSE,including 28 professors(1 member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and 2 Chair Professor of Cheung Kong Scholar and 1 Chief Scientist of 973 program).
At prsent there are near 1000 bachelor ,M.S.and Ph.D students enrolled to pursue their degrees at MSE.More than 400 research projects were carried out from 1999,including more than 100 state leverl programs,such as National Basic Research Program of China (973),High-Tech R&D Program of China(863),National Key Technologies R&D Program ,and National Natural Science Foudation of China(NSFC).More than 150 papers are annually pbulished on international and domestic journals,30 books have been published.Up to now more than 70 high-level academic awards have been won,including 10 awards of National Science and Technology Achievement Prize.In particular,two National Awards for invention were awarded respectively in 2005 and 2006.
MSE has undergone academic exchanges and research cooperation with many overseas universities and research centers in USA,UK,japan, Germany,Belgium,France etc.Quite a number of foreign scholars deliver lectures every year here and many researchers have been invited to be session chairmen,academic member or keynote speakers of international conferences.
